LIPCHITZ (Jacques). Autograph letter signed, dated December - Lot 316
LIPCHITZ (Jacques). Autograph letter signed, dated December 22, 1959: "Dear Sir, I have just received your kind letter, thank you. A host of ideas are flooding my mind, and one desire is to disassociate myself completely from the decision of the jury for the last Antoine Bourdelle prize, of which I was nominally a member. Yes, one must have the courage of one's convictions and say what my conscience tells me to say to you and, through you, to Madame Bourdelle. The two photos you were kind enough to send me are, I assume, based on the work of two prizewinners. Well, we can say with confidence that where all these stones are amalgamated, they are not yet sculptures, they are yet to be made and we can't prejudge what will come out of them. The other, and I can say this with no less assurance, will never be sculpture. I must add, impertinent as it may seem to you, that I would never have dared to associate his work with the name of the great sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. Madame Bourdelle presided over the jury, so she had a predominant voice. How could she let such a thing happen, when there are sculptors around with so much real promise? In any case, I'll never again be part of a jury where I myself can't fight for my convictions. Thank you again for sending me these documents, it was a great lesson for me. With my respectful tributes to Madame Bourdelle, please accept, dear Sir, but seen the best for the New Year, sincerely yours.
P.S.: Looking for the address, I've just found and reread your letter of November 15. I humbly add my voice to that of the "unanimity of fools", knowing in advance that I won't be able to tip the scales. With this I adore Waldemar George, who is a lifelong friend. " Expert: Nicolas ASVISIO
