[MARINE-AMERICA]. PICKER (James). Signed, dated September 15, 1781, double countersigned by John Ash and Richard Cowband [?] "We, the undersigned James Picker, naval officer in the service of the States of South Carolina, commissioned by Mr. Alexandre Gillon commodor of said States and Mr. John Joyne [?] Captain of the warship L'Indien presently South Carolina, to conduct and govern with twenty-four Luxembourg volunteers commanded M. Richard Captain to the said corps, two novice sailors and nine English sailors prisoners, the Brick l'alexandre, Liverpool privateer mounted with ten six-pounder guns, taken by us on 6 7bre 1781 at 59 degrees North latitude and 14 West longitude certify and attest to all those to whom it belongs that Sr. Richard conducted himself with all the femesty and prudence befitting a true military man in the engagement we had after eleven hours of hunting, towards latitude 57 degrees North and longitude 20 degrees West, on the 14th of the same month from seven o'clock in the evening until half past eleven with the heart-of-oak Brick Corsaire de Liverpool doubled in copper, mounted with 16 pieces of Nine and 90 crewmen, and that he only made the volunteers lay down their arms when, in a Council of War held for this purpose, we fully recognized that a longer resistance could produce no other fruit than [....] our enemies, sink us low and uselessly spill the blood of the men whose salvation was entrusted to us; in witness whereof we have given him the present certificate to serve him and be worth what is right with the King of France and Monseigneur le chevalier de Luxembourg. Done on board the Coeur de Chêne today" (slight missing and restorations) Expert : Nicolas ASVISIO
