RENAN (Ernest). Signed autograph letter to Charles Daremberg - Lot 298
RENAN (Ernest). Signed autograph letter to Charles Daremberg, written in Perros-Guirec, August 20, 1891: "Dear Mr. Daremberg, Would you allow me to claim the memory of the friendship I had for Mr. your father to ask you a small favor. I'm getting old; Brittany does me a lot of good; but I need a bit of sun. You usually live in the land of the sun; give me a little information. I'd like to find a sunny, quiet spot, where we can take short walks, to spend a month there with my wife, in full exposure to the south, to repair what the mists here are debilitating for impoverished muscles like mine. We won't have any servants with us; consequently, we'll need a hotel; but we're not high-lifes; we'd like something like a well-isolated pavilion, where we're out of the hustle and bustle of the world. I'm on a workaholic's streak; I'd like to rest like here, but with more sun than here. My dear Mr. Daremberg, you must know of some place in the Midi that more or less fulfills this program. I don't want this to cost you any trouble. But if you see the possibility of finding the little paradise I've just described to you, even with a lot of the conditions I'm putting on it, I'd be very grateful if you could tell me which way I should look. Forgive me, dear Monsieur Darenberg, and please accept my most affectionately devoted sentiments. Enclosed: SAINTE-BEUVE (Charles-Auguste). Autograph letter signed, dated May 6 [1865]. "My dear friend, your congratulations will not be lost amid the flood. You are one of those whose esteem counts for a great deal, because it is based on solid foundations. You have known for a long time what I think of your merit; I am happy to find your friendship in this circumstance. All yours." Expert : Nicolas ASVISIO
