GONCOURT (Edmond and Jules de). Set of 4 autograph letters s - Lot 297
GONCOURT (Edmond and Jules de). Set of 4 autograph letters signed and one card including: - Edmond, July 1888: "Dear friend, I'm leaving for the Meuse the day after tomorrow and don't have time to look for anything, and I'm afraid I have nothing to give you. I'm very pleased that you've found a way to say something good about the immortal, because yesterday Dodé complained to me in a very friendly and tender way about the silence of the literary supplement, and I would have asked you to write him a word if it hadn't been for your kind lines in the Figaro this morning. Amitiés" - Edmond, Monday November 1886. My dear friend, I especially recommend a novel by Paul Margueritte, which is to be brought to Le Temps these days by Decaux, his publisher. All four are a most remarkable novel, and in my judgment one of the novelists of the future. On top of that, his father the general didn't leave him a penny, and all he has is a job that pays him 165 francs a month to feed his wife and two little girls. This tells you that there is every reason for your interest." - Edmond, autograph card, "How is the little one?" - Jules, June 22, 1864, "I shall be much obliged to you if you will put to press as soon as possible the history of French society during the Directoire period, following on from the same history during the Revolution, which you have just printed for the Didier bookshop. I warn you at the same time to ask for a circulation permit for the proofs, as I shall be leaving for the countryside. As soon as I arrive at my destination, I'll send you my address. Please believe me most sincerely, sir, yours faithfully." - Jules, November 26, 1889. "Sir, The drawing of the Comtesse d'Egmont that you kindly submit for my appreciation as a connoisseur of the 18th century, is the most frank, the most authentic Carmontelle - who never signed anything but a note on the back of the drawing. This drawing is part of that immense collection of profiles representing the society of the time and especially the society of the Duc d'Orléans - a collection of which I have the chevalier de [....], Mr Hérault de Sechelles, a collection in which the Duc d'Aumale found the reunion of more than a hundred in London. In exchange for this expertise I ask you a small favor, the sending of the list of Guimard letters that you know of in the collections, with the exception of Morrison's, of which I have copies of all the letters. You do me the honor of calling me a famous novelist in your catalogs, and you call my brother a distinguished scholar! My brother is half - and a good half - of Germinie Lacerteux, Renée Mauperin, Manette Salomon, etc... in short, of all the novels that have made our name, and he has every right to the same appellation as I."
