Marcel MOULY (1918-2008) - Lot 229
Marcel MOULY (1918-2008) Marrakech - Souk aux teinturiers, 1999 Oil on canvas Signed "M. Mouly" and dated 1999 lower right 25 x 35 cm NOTICE Marcel Mouly (1918-2008) belongs to that generation of artists who, in the post-war period, brought color and structure into dialogue within a profoundly modern pictorial language. Influenced by the synthetic cubism of Fernand Léger, with whom he shared a studio for a time, Mouly created canvases in which stylized volumes are illuminated by vibrant hues. His harbor scenes, interiors and figures are part of a tradition inherited from Matisse and Derain, while asserting his own musicality, where form seems to respond to an inner rhythm. Based at La Ruche, a hotbed of artistic activity in Paris, Mouly followed in the footsteps of the École de Paris, working alongside artists such as Louis Toffoli, Gustave Singier and Alfred Manessier. He plays an active role in the dissemination of an accessible yet demanding art form, exhibiting in numerous galleries in Paris and abroad. His practice of lithography, which he developed in parallel with painting, helped forge an instantly recognizable style of bold chromatic contrasts and pared-down compositions.
