NOTICE
Henry Saint-Clair (1899-1990) was a French painter, born in Normandy (Arras) and settled in Sotteville near the picturesque port of Honfleur, whose work is part of the Post-Impressionist movement. He remains particularly renowned for his beach and harbor scenes - sailboats, swimmers, seaside strolls - which he executed mostly in oil on board or panel between 1920 and 1970, interrupted only during the Occupation. Influenced by Eugène Boudin, a fervent painter of changing skies and light effects, and by Raoul Dufy, whose cheerful colors and marine life are echoed in his canvases, Saint-Clair shared a taste for the open air, luminous detail and the representation of coastal life, close to that of Boudin, Monet and some of Dufy's later works. His style combines fidelity to the subject - seascapes, Normandy beaches, seaside villages - with a vibrant touch, sensitive to atmospheric variations, just as lovers of impressionist light or decorative colors would like.
