Gustave CARIOT (1872-1950) - Lot 198
Gustave CARIOT (1872-1950) Fort national de Saint-Malo, 1915 Oil on wood panel Monogrammed "G.C." and dated lower right 14 x 22 cm (Slightly missing, worn, nail indentations all around) This work will be included in the catalog raisonné of Gustave Cariot, currently being compiled by Norbert and Tess Saffar. NOTICE Gustave Cariot (1872-1950) was one of the post-impressionist landscape painters, influenced by Divisionism and the research into color and light favored by Paul Signac and Henri Le Sidaner. An active member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants, he strove to depict French landscapes with great atmospheric sensitivity. This view of Saint-Malo testifies to his taste for maritime scenes and Breton ports, which he treated with vibrant brushstrokes. Close to the Neo-Impressionist movement, Cariot appealed to lovers of seaside landscapes and early 20th-century French painting.
