Appraiser: Cabinet CHANOIT NOTICE Marie-Joseph Léon Clavel, known as Iwill (1850-1923), was a French landscape painter whose work embodies the quest for light, atmosphere and nature, in the tradition of the Romantic and Naturalist landscape. Born in Paris and trained by Emmanuel Lansyer and Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg, he made a name for himself from 1875 onwards at the Salon des Artistes Français and then at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, adopting the pseudonym "Iwill" to signify his personal and artistic intent. His main subjects were the Normandy coast, harbor mists, Holland and Italy (Venice in particular), often treated with finesse in oil or pastel. Recognized by his peers, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur and medals at the World's Fairs (silver in 1889, bronze in 1900), and his works can be found in museums such as Orsay and the Petit Palais. Art lovers were interested in his rendering of the heavy sky, moonlight, atmospheric effects and serene, melancholy touch, in the vein of Corot, Jongkind and Daubigny.
