Appraiser: Cabinet CHANOIT NOTICE Marie-Joseph Léon Clavel, better known by his pseudonym "Iwill" (1850-1923), was a French landscape painter who established himself in the artistic landscape of the late XIXᵉ and early XXᵉ centuries. Born in Paris, he abandoned his beginnings as a parliamentary stenographer to devote himself fully to painting, influenced by Emmanuel Lansyer and Charles Kuwasseg. From 1875, Iwill exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, joined the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and was awarded a silver medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, followed by the Légion d'honneur in 1894. His abundant output features a variety of motifs: seashores, tormented skies, Norman mists or Venetian landscapes, tense between serenity and changing atmospheres. His works can be found in several public collections in France (Orsay, Petit Palais, Rouen...) and abroad, making him a respected figure in naturalism, late impressionism and landscape art.
