NOTICE
Marie-Joseph Léon Clavel, better known under the pseudonym Iwill (1850-1923), was a French landscape painter whose work marked the salons of the late XIXᵉ century with its atmospheric light and often dramatic skies. A pupil of Emmanuel Lansyer and Charles E. Kuwasseg, he exhibited from 1875 at the Salon des Artistes Français and then at the Société nationale des beaux-arts, before receiving a silver medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition, being named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1894, and winning a bronze medal in 1900. A tireless traveler, he set up his easel in Normandy, Brittany, Holland, Italy (notably Venice) and even New Zealand, exploring the effects of fog, mist and heavy skies on the sea, coast and harbors alike. His signature "Iwill" - sometimes written as a single word - reflects his determination to devote himself entirely to landscape; his works combine romantic sobriety, watercolor, pastel and oil, in a palette that is often soft but contrasting. His work, preserved in several French museums, is in the tradition of seaside landscapists and atmospheric painters, close to Lansyer, and even turn-of-the-century painters of Brittany and Normandy.
