NOTICE
Marie-Joseph Léon Clavel, known as "Iwill" (1850-1923), was a French landscape painter trained by Lansyer and Kuwasseg, close to atmospheric realism and impressionism. He frequented the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, painting Brittany, Normandy and Holland, as well as luminous views of Venice, its lagoon, palaces and canals. His work is reminiscent of that of Félix Ziem, who made Venice one of his favorite motifs in the tradition of romantic veduta, or of Martín Rico y Ortega, the Spanish plein-air painter also renowned for his Venetian light. We might also think of Claude Monet, who in his travels approached Venice from the angle of light effects and reflections, and Federico del Campo, whose views of the lagoon seduce enthusiasts with their crystalline atmosphere.
