Henri Jean PONTOY (1888-1968) The painter at his easel in the countryside Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 55 x 46 cm (Spots on the back and restorations) Appraiser : Cabinet CHANOIT NOTICE Henri-Jean Pontoy (1888-1968), born in Reims and died in Six-Fours-les-Plages, was a French painter trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Luc-Olivier Merson. He was an integral part of the Orientalist movement, which flourished in the early XXᵉ century, particularly marked by his travels in North Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco) and his stays in Ouarzazate and then Fez. His works are distinguished by scenes of souks, Kasbahs and portraits of everyday Moroccan life, in a luminous, warm and airy palette, in both oil and watercolor. Winner of the Grand Prix de la Ville d'Alger in 1933, he shares certain affinities with artists such as Jacques Majorelle, Etienne Dinet and the painters of the Salon des artistes orientalis-tes algériens.
