NOTICE
Rastislaw Racoff (1904-1982), born in St. Petersburg, moved to Paris in the 1920s, joining the great exodus of Russian artists to the artistic capital. Despite limited recognition in his day, he distinguished himself with a style that was difficult to classify, drawing on magic realism while retaining accents of trompe-l'œil or poetic urban scenes: several works dating from the 1950s-60s (still life, views of the Seine, Parisian streets) bear witness to this singular, highly structured signature.
In the history of the École de Paris, Racoff's horizon is close to that of Russian artists such as André Lanskoy, Alexandre Altmann, Natalia Goncharova and Pavel Tchelitchew, who also passed through Paris, even if they were more inclined towards abstraction or constructivism.
