Nicolas KALMAKOFF (1873-1955) - Lot 170
Nicolas KALMAKOFF (1873-1955) Spanish dancer, 1946 Oil on wood panel Monogrammed and dated lower right, titled and signed on the back 44 x 34 cm Framed PROVENANCE: French private collection, then by inheritance NOTICE A symbolist and mystical painter, Nicolas Kalmakoff (1873-1955) developed a singular universe nourished by occultism, eroticism and Russian spiritual traditions. Close in spirit to the Mir Iskusstva group, he shared certain affinities with Mikhail Vroubel, Léon Bakst and Pavel Filonov. His style, imbued with fantasy, art nouveau and decadentism, sometimes evokes the tormented visions of Odilon Redon or Aubrey Beardsley. Exiled to Paris, Kalmakoff was long forgotten before being rediscovered as a singular figure of the Russian avant-garde in exile.
