Ernest PIGNON-ERNEST (b. 1942) - Lot 159
Ernest PIGNON-ERNEST (b. 1942) Study - René Cassin, 2008 Mixed media on paper Signed, dated and annotated "étude pour René Cassin" in lower middle corner Sheet size: 20 x 17 cm (Stains) PROVENANCE : Preparatory study for the fresco at Levens-Tourette secondary school (Alpes-Maritimes), produced as part of the "1% Culture" project. French private collection. NOTICE : Ernest Pignon-Ernest, born in Nice in 1942, is one of France's leading contemporary and urban artists, renowned for his drawings, collages and site-specific interventions that combine memory, political gesture, poetry and humanism. Since 1966, he has developed a committed, poetic and symbolic body of work, oscillating between the figurative, the mythological, the sacred and the socially critical. His style is strongly linked to drawing (charcoal, black stone), urban poetry, history and monumental inscriptions in places, bringing him into close contact with artists such as Arman, Bernar Venet and other figures on the Nice scene and the "militant" art movement. His sensitive images of the human condition, rights, exile and memory are often deployed on walls, staircases and facades, imposing themselves in public spaces. The study of René Cassin is part of this approach: portraiture, memory, responsibility, link to law, tribute to a figure of international law and human rights.
