NOTICE
Mariano Rodríguez (1912-1990), known simply as "Mariano", is one of the leading figures of Cuban vanguardia histórica. Born in Havana, he trained in Mexico with Manuel Rodríguez Lozano, and soon developed a style combining expressive figuration, popular Cuban motifs (gallos, campesinos, landscapes, fruit) and modernist influences, notably cubism, muralism and abstraction. Marked by his attachment to national identity, he actively participates in artistic and literary reviews, teaches, and also works in ceramics, drawing, illustration and scenography. His works, which can be found in major American and European collections, illustrate a gradual evolution towards abstraction, while retaining a strong chromatic expressiveness. A modernist Cuban artist, he is in the tradition of those who seek to combine popular culture, national identity and plastic experimentation.
