(Wear scratches) NOTICE Eugène Chaperon (1857-1938), a history and genre painter and military illustrator, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Jules Lefebvre and Benjamin-Constant. He followed the academic tradition of the late 19th century, with a marked predilection for battle scenes, particularly those of the French Revolution and Empire, where documentary rigor vies with theatricality. His precise, narrative style follows in the footsteps of artists such as Édouard Detaille and Alphonse de Neuville, major figures in French military painting. A regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1881 onwards, Chaperon was also called upon for historical illustrations, helping to disseminate a heroic imagery of the national past. Although his work is less well known today, it remains of interest to lovers of military iconography, in a taste similar to that of Lucien Rousselot or Job (Jacques Onfroy de Bréville), but with a more marked desire for historical veracity than popular imagery.
