Yusuf ARAKKAL (India, 1945 - 2016) Abstract composition Mixed media on paper Signed and dated 'Yusuf Arakkal 96' lower left Size (view). 79 x 99 cm Under plexiglass Appraiser: Cabinet PORTIER associés NOTICE Yusuf Arakkal (1945-2016) was born in Chavakkad (Kerala). Orphaned, he left his hometown at the age of 16 for Bengalore to pursue his artistic quest. After graduating in painting from the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath in 1973, he went on to specialize in printmaking at the National Academy Community Studios (New Delhi). Through his art, Arakkal depicts daily life in urban poverty. His style is characterized by surprising textures and surfaces evoking the wear and tear of time. Many of his canvases focus on a solitary human figure, depicted in a variety of poses. "The face, whether male or female, is mine, an observer, alone. I've been painting this character for twenty years. I'm not bald, I'm not a woman, but I'm sure it's me." Arakkal has received numerous awards, including the National Award (1983) and was awarded the Lorenzo de Medici Gold Medal at the Florence Biennale and the Lalit Kala Academy Award (1979). His work has been exhibited internationally, notably in France and Brazil. He lived and worked in Bengalore until his death in 2016.
