Sunil DAS (India, 1939 - 2015) Composition with horse's head Oil on canvas Signed and dated 'Sunil 99' upper right Size (view) 21.5 x 21.5 cm Framed Appraiser: Cabinet PORTIER associés NOTICE Sunil Das (1939-2015), born in Calcutta, studied at the Government College of Art Craft in Calcutta before winning a scholarship from the French government to continue his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A founding member of the Society of Contemporary Artists (SCA), whose members included Somnath Hore, Bijan Choudhury, Arun Bose, Dipak Banerjee and Dharamnarayan Dasgupta, he was one of India's great post-modernist masters. A prolific artist who worked on a variety of themes, mainly social and animal, with a strong emotional impact, he never confined himself to a single medium, navigating between painting, drawing, pastel and engraving. He is represented in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), the Lalit Kala Akademi and Museum Ludwig (Germany). He exhibited in prestigious galleries such as Chemould Art Gallery (Mumbai), Gallery Kolkata (Calcutta) and Sumukha Gallery (Bangalore). Sunil Das was also supported by art patrons, including influential Bengali collectors, and critics such as Richard Bartholomew recognized his talent early on. He made friends with other artists of his generation, such as Tyeb Mehta. He was awarded the Indian civil distinction of Padma Shri in 2014. He died in 2015.
