Gurcharan SINGH (India, 1949) Interior scene Oil on canvas Signed and dated 'Gurcharan 93 N Delhi' on reverse (stains) Size (view) 59.5 x 29 cm Framed Appraiser: Cabinet PORTIER associés NOTICE Gurcharan Singh is an Indian painter born in 1949 in Patiala, Punjab. He is renowned for his committed figurative approach, focusing on the marginalized classes of Indian society. He studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Chandigar. His works are the fruit of an acute and lucid observation of human misery and its exploitation, notably through prostitution, in the city's underworld; they are a revelation of this, transfigured by the artist's singular gaze. He draws his influences from Indian miniatures and Expressionism, creating a visual language situated between tradition and modernity. His works are held in institutions such as the Lalit Kala Akademi (New Delhi) and the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi). He has received several awards, including the Padma Shri in 1991.
