NOTICE
Gopal Adivrekar (1938-2008) was a major abstract painter of modern Indian art, graduating in 1963 from the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. Born in a village in the coastal region of Konkan (Maharashtra), he was strongly inspired by the seascapes and natural landscapes of this region, transforming the colors of the sea, rocks, sand and birds into powerful abstract compositions. Adivrekar exhibited widely in India, notably at the Dhoomimal Art Centre in New Delhi and the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. He was also closely associated with the Lalit Kala Akademi, which exhibits leading contemporary artists (such as Arup Das, Bimal Dagupta and Kulkarni) and held the influential position of President of the Bombay Art Society, playing an important role in the recognition of contemporary Indian art.
