Trained at the Government College of Art and Craft in Calcutta, then at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1960s, Chowdhury developed a singular body of work that draws its inspiration from Bengali folk art, Mughal miniatures and modern European painters. Everyday life and the human condition in contemporary India form the core of his subjects. In 1970, he joined the Calcutta Painters group (Nirode Mazumdar, Subhagendranath Tagore) and became close to art critic K.G. Subramanyan. He was also supported by institutions such as Galerie Chemould, Mumbai's first contemporary art gallery, and the Lalit Kala Akademi. His first major recognition came with his solo show at Galerie Dhoomimal in New Delhi in the 1970s, followed by countless exhibitions in India and abroad, including at the São Paulo Biennale (1979), the Venice Biennale and the Asia Society in New York, and in 2024 he was awarded the Asia Arts Vanguard Award by the Asia Arts Game Changer Awards. A prominent member of the artistic and political scene (he has sat in the Indian Parliament), Jogen Chowdhury has also contributed to the preservation of contemporary Indian art as a curator and teacher. Today, his work can be seen in major institutions: the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), as well as in several galleries in Mumbai, Kolkata and abroad.
