After Pierre-Jules MÈNE (1810-1879) Partridge hunting Black patina bronze proof Dimensions: 21 x 39 x 16 cm (Patina wear, scratches and wear) NOTICE Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879) was a major French sculptor of the animal school, recognized as one of the pioneers of animal sculpture in the XIXᵉ century. Born in Paris, the son of a metal turner, he trained in the bronze trades and set up his own foundry in 1838, enabling him to master lost-wax casting. A specialist in small animal bronzes - horses, dogs, cattle, sheep, etc. - his works were highly prized during the Second World War. - his works were highly prized during the Second Empire, particularly by the bourgeoisie. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1838 until his death, was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1861, and worked closely with his son-in-law Auguste Caïn. His style combines realism, anatomical precision, sentimental elegance and technical virtuosity, in the vein of Antoine-Louis Barye, Auguste Caïn, Pierre-Louis Rouillard and Rosa Bonheur.
