Size (view). 74 x 74 cm Framed Appraiser: Cabinet PORTIER associés NOTICE K. M. Adimoolam (1938-2008), born in Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu), is a major figure in Indian abstract art. In 1959, influenced by the sculptor Dhanapal, he joined the School of Arts and Crafts in Chennai, graduating in 1966. He first made a name for himself with a series of almost one hundred black-and-white portraits of Mahatma Gandhi. Adimoolam then moved into abstract painting, abandoning figurative forms in favor of a profound exploration of color. "My canvases represent neither nature nor the perception of my mind. My works are not about words; they are about vision. A vision that attempts to reveal certain unspoken truths of Nature". He has exhibited widely in India, notably at the Lalit Kala Akademi Chennai, the Jehangir Art Gallery (Mumbai), and the Bombay Art Society. Closely associated with the literary world, he collaborated with the Modern Tamil Writer's Group, illustrating numerous works, and was influential in the Madras Art Movement led by K.C.S. Paniker. His career was recognized by numerous prestigious awards, notably from the Lalit Kala Akademi (New Delhi) and the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata. He was chosen to curate the Indian section of the Ankara Biennale in 1990. K. M. Adimoolam passed away in January 2008.
