(Scratches, rubbing, patina wear, small dent) NOTICE ean-Léon Gérôme, a French artist of the academic period, is renowned for his historical, oriental and mythological scenes, as well as for his technically precise sculptures. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he became one of the leading figures of the academic movement of the XIXᵉ century. His style is characterized by meticulous realism, a striking sense of detail and great mastery of light. His paintings, such as Pollice verso and La Mort de César, portray episodes from Antiquity with dramatic intensity, while his Orientalist works capture the landscapes, customs and architecture of the Middle East with lively curiosity. Gérôme also approached sculpture with the same concern for perfection, creating works that reflect his interest in Antiquity and his research into the human form. Among his close contemporaries were William Bouguereau, known for his academic paintings and idealized mythological scenes, and Alexandre Cabanel, who shared Gérôme's passion for detail and classical composition. Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, a sculptor of the same period, is another artist whose work reflects a blend of realism and academic elegance. Gérôme's works, whether painted or sculpted, are highly prized today for their technical quality and their ability to capture the essence of his era.
