Produced mainly between 1911 and 1913, these stone sculptures evoke primitive art and are marked by elongated, stylized lines that lend the faces a serene, timeless elegance. Influenced by African sculpture and Egyptian statuary, Modigliani adopted a pared-down, minimalist approach, reducing features to their essence. His Têtes de Femme are distinguished by their long, graceful necks, often closed almond-shaped eyes and enigmatic expressions, characteristics also present in his paintings. These sculptures, though few in number, reveal Modigliani's talent for capturing beauty and emotional depth in a simplified, harmonious form. Modigliani follows in the footsteps of artists such as Constantin Brancusi, whose pure, minimalist forms also left their mark on modern art, and Jacob Epstein, who shared his interest in African influences and primitive art. With his Têtes de Femme, Modigliani imposed a unique and poetic vision of the human figure, making his sculptures rare and emblematic works of modern art.
