NOTICE
Trained among goldsmiths and chiselers, Carrier-Belleuse began his career in England as a sculptor for Manufacture Minton, producing small statuettes. Exhibiting for the first time at the 1857 Salon, his career took off. He won numerous public commissions, and took part in decorating major Parisian monuments such as the Louvre, the Banque de France and the Palais Garnier.
Inspired by Jean Goujon, Bellifontain mannerism and the great sculptors of the 18th century, he was nicknamed "the French Clodion". Collaborating with the great goldsmiths and industrialists of the 19th century, such as Christofle and Froment-Meurice, and taking advantage of their innovations, notably in electroplating, he produced a large number of publishing statuettes, the best-known of which is still his famous chryselephantine statuette of "la liseuse".
