NOTICE Rémi Blanchard, French artist and founding member of the Figuration Libre movement, developed a singular aesthetic in the 1980s, imbued with vivid colors and expressive forms, which celebrates the simplicity and spontaneity of representation. Among his recurring subjects from this period, the ibex holds a special place. A symbol of freedom and elevation, this animal is often depicted in stylized poses, populating dreamlike, naive landscapes that evoke a poetic, almost magical universe. Blanchard's paintings from the 1980s show an iconographic approach in which the ibex becomes a symbolic figure, perhaps inspired by childhood memories of the wilderness, or by a desire to represent strength and resilience. Using intense flat colors and simplified forms, Blanchard creates compositions in which the ibex seems frozen in a timeless space, like a totem or an emblem of his own inner world. His style, close to folk and naive art, reflects a concern to make art accessible, while infusing it with a touch of mystery and enchantment. Blanchard's works from this period, alongside those of his Figuration Libre peers such as Hervé Di Rosa and Robert Combas, embody a joyful, narrative art, where each canvas invites escape. Today, Rémi Blanchard's paintings, particularly those on the theme of the ibex, are appreciated for their freshness and ability to capture the beauty of the imaginary.
