PROVENANCE Galerie Raymond Dreyfus, 3 rue des Beaux-Arts, 75006 Paris. NOTICE Olivier Debré, French painter and figure of lyrical abstraction, is known for his works exploring color and light, often inspired by specific landscapes and places. His 1989 painting Ocre rose de l'Acropole, Athènes is a poetic tribute to Greece and the timeless beauty of the Acropolis. In this work, Debré conveys the essence of the ancient site using subtle shades of ochre and pink, evoking the hues of stone at sunset. The canvas's broad flat tones and textures reflect the depth and warmth of the Greek landscape. Debré reveals an almost tactile sensibility, where each brushstroke creates an effect of movement and light, symbolizing both the solidity of the Acropolis and the softness of the surrounding atmosphere. This play of colors and pure forms embodies Debré's lyrical approach, where landscapes are summed up in impressions, energies and emotions. Close in his approach to abstraction to Zao Wou-Ki for his poetic interpretation of nature, and influenced by Mark Rothko in his use of color fields to express emotions, Olivier Debré has created a unique visual language. Ocre rose de l'Acropole is a remarkable example of his work, where color becomes an expression of memory and light, capturing the immutable beauty of places while offering a personal, sensory vision.
