Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, he moved to Paris in 1912. He returned to Czechoslovakia after the Second World War, where he continued his work until his death. He is one of a number of important national artists, including František Kupka, Josef Čapek, Jan Zrzavý, Emil Filla, Václav Špála, Karel Černý and Alfons Mucha.
