NOTICE
Latvian painter Wilhelm C. Purvītis is one of his country's most emblematic artists, particularly renowned for his lyrical, poetic landscapes. Often described as the "master of snows", Purvītis excels in depicting Nordic landscapes, capturing the seasons, the play of light and winter atmospheres with a unique sensitivity. In his oil paintings, he depicts snow-covered forests, frozen rivers and winter fields bathed in soft light, where nature seems suspended in silent peace.
Purvītis' palette is dominated by tones of white, blue and gray, to which he adds touches of pink or gold to evoke the sun's reflections on the snow. His style combines delicate realism with an impressionistic touch, creating scenes of great visual and emotional depth. Every detail - from bare branches to shadows on the snow - is rendered with a finesse that invites the viewer to contemplate the pure, still beauty of Nordic landscapes.
Close in his naturalistic and poetic approach to landscapes to artists such as Isaac Levitan and Frits Thaulow, Purvītis is a master at capturing the tranquility of nature. Today, his oil paintings are highly prized for their ability to pay homage to Latvian landscapes, offering a timeless and deeply contemplative vision of Nordic nature.
