EXHIBITION "Adel Abdessemed - Charbon" presented by galerie Yvon Lambert at Art Basel in October 2021 NOTICE Adel Abdessemed is a contemporary artist of international renown, known for his provocative and engaged works that interrogate themes of violence, culture, politics and the human condition. Born in Algeria, he moved to France and developed a powerful, multidisciplinary artistic language, using a variety of materials such as metal, marble, wax and everyday objects. Abdessemed explores complex subjects through installations, sculptures, drawings, videos and performances, creating thought-provoking works that question convention. His iconic works include monumental installations and sculptures that reveal humanity's inner conflicts, the struggle for freedom, and the paradoxes of contemporary society. He often revisits cultural and historical symbols by confronting them with brutal or disconcerting realities, creating a strong emotional impact in the viewer. His series of Cree sculptures, in which animal and human figures seem to be pushed to emotional extremes, is a striking example of this tension. Abdessemed's artistic commitment and ability to challenge are close to those of Kader Attia and Mona Hatoum, and he shares an artistic vision that questions cultural boundaries and social taboos. His works, exhibited in museums and biennials the world over, are today prized for their ability to challenge perceptions and open dialogues on crucial issues, confirming Adel Abdessemed as one of the most powerful voices in contemporary art.
