JAPAN - EDO period (1603 - 1868) Portable Butsudan altar in black and gold lacquered wood, with two rounded doors revealing the deity Kannon Bosatsu (known as Guanyin in China). Depicted with her right hand in vitarka mudra and her left hand holding a lotus leaf, she stands on a lotiform base in red and gold lacquered wood, in front of a mandorla with a contoured edge engraved with radiating grooves. The altar is embellished with chased hardware and bears two lacquered symbols on a gilded background "Mon" of the Tokugawa dynasty (1603-1868), repeated in black lacquer on the reverse of each door. Approx. 35 x 14 cm (Surface wear, jumps of lacquer on the lower reverse, small bumps and blistering usual for lacquer, one fingertip of the deity broken, crack at the base at the level of the feet)
