Reliquary guardian figure - Lot 118
Reliquary guardian figure Kota-Obamba Gabon Wood, copper and brass plates and strips Height: 50 cm Base by Japanese cabinetmaker Kichizo Inagaki (1876-1951), stamped on the back of the pole PROVENANCE Former Raymond Paul Hillairet (1906-1986) collection, then by descent. Beautiful reliquary guardian figure of very classical form, featuring a large, slightly concave oval face, decorated with thin metal strips arranged in a radiating pattern, triangular nose, crescent-shaped eyes. The crest-shaped headdress and side shells are perfectly balanced and decorated around the edges with bands of embossed motifs. The base is missing, having been attacked by xylophagous insects. Superb patina of use, with a thin layer of crusty material on the back fine layer of crusty material, testifying to a real and ancient ritual use. R. P. Hillairet spent his entire career in the navy. He was associated with the artist Charles Lapicque, a great lover of African art, who may have converted him to his passion. We do not know under what circumstances he may have acquired this Kota reliquary figure, but the presence of an Inagaki base indicates that the object was present on the Paris market in the first half of the 20th century.
