Roger CAPRON (1922-2006) - Lot 178
Roger CAPRON (1922-2006) Herbier" oval coffee table resting on four cylindrical legs in natural wood, the top decorated with polychrome glazed and iridescent ceramic tiles featuring an engraved frieze of leaves on a beige background. Signed on the top in a tile 35 x 135 x 74 cm (Wear, scratches and small chips on the top) NOTICE Roger Capron evolved in an artistic context marked by a revival of ceramics, particularly in Vallauris, where he settled. Among the artists close to him, Pablo Picasso was undoubtedly one of the most influential. Picasso settled in Vallauris in the late 1940s and revolutionized artistic ceramics with his avant-garde creations. Capron, while having a different approach, shared Picasso's interest in reinventing traditional ceramics. Another important ceramist in Capron's circle was Georges Jouve, an artist who, like Capron, sought to push the boundaries of ceramics by creating sculptural, modernist pieces. Both Jouve and Capron were fascinated by the modernity and expressive possibilities of ceramics. We should also mention Jean Derval, who, like Capron, helped establish Vallauris as a major ceramics center. Derval, with his figurative and colorful work, shared with Capron the idea of blending tradition and modernity in his ceramic creations. Finally, Capron also rubbed shoulders with designers such as Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé, with whom he shared a functional vision of design, integrating art into everyday life through decorative and utilitarian objects. The dialogue between ceramics and industrial design was at the heart of his work, and these collaborations played a crucial role in disseminating his creations.
