Ji ZHOU (1970) - Lot 177
Ji ZHOU (1970) o.T (Diptych - Arc de Triomphe) Digital photograph on PVC panel 74 x 99 cm (each panel approx.) (Wear and minor scratches) PROVENANCE Atelier des artistes - Ris Orangis, 2007 NOTICE Ji Zhou (b. 1970) is a contemporary Chinese artist renowned for his multidisciplinary work combining photography, sculpture and installation. Born in Beijing, Ji Zhou explores themes of perception, illusion and the relationship between nature and civilization. His works often question the way we construct and perceive reality, while playing with references to traditional Chinese culture and Western art. One of his best-known series, entitled "Maquettes de paysages", features photographs of landscapes that appear realistic at first glance, but in reality reveal structures made from maps and everyday objects. By using artificial elements to recreate natural scenes, Ji Zhou questions the boundary between the natural and the artificial, interrogating the way human beings organize and represent their environment. His work follows in the footsteps of contemporary Chinese artists such as Cai Guo-Qiang and Xu Bing, who also explore the transformation of cultural traditions and the confrontation between the ancient and the modern. Like them, Ji Zhou employs a visual language rich in symbols to interrogate questions of society, culture and identity. Ji Zhou's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, notably in Asia, Europe and the United States. He is particularly appreciated for his ability to combine traditional artistic practices with contemporary concepts, creating pieces that captivate with their form while inviting deeper reflection on how we perceive and understand our environment. Today, Ji Zhou continues to explore themes related to cartography, landscape and culture, pursuing his artistic quest to challenge our perceptions and re-examine our relationship with the world.
