Melik OUZANI (1942 - ) "Cat in the moonlight Mixed media on canvas Signed, titled and annotated "I.84" on the back 74 x 92 cm (stains and hole) Resale rights at the buyer's expense NOTICE Melik Ouzani (b. 1942) is a French painter and sculptor of Algerian origin, whose work explores themes of identity, memory and exile. Ouzani has distinguished himself through an artistic approach marked by a great diversity of techniques and materials, creating works with rich textures and abstract compositions. His art often reflects profound preoccupations linked to the human condition, tackling subjects such as war, injustice and the quest to belong, as well as spiritual and philosophical issues. Ouzani's creations combine symbolic and dreamlike elements, offering both a personal and universal reading of the human experience. The works of Melik Ouzani are part of a dialogue with those of other contemporary artists who have also tackled themes linked to exile, identity and memory. Zao Wou-Ki, for example, influenced Ouzani with his abstract approach to painting, combining Eastern tradition and Western influences in atmospheric compositions. Gérard Garouste, a French artist whose works also incorporate mythological and symbolic elements, shares Ouzani's reflections on cultural heritage and the quest for meaning. Pierre Soulages, with his exploration of deep blacks and light, also left his mark on Ouzani, particularly in his treatment of matter and surface in his works. Ouzani belongs to this generation of artists who, while rooted in abstract modernity, have never ceased to explore humanist and existential questions, making their work a place of intimate and committed reflection.
