Maurice ROMBERG DE VAUCORBEIL (1861 - 1943) - Lot 151
Maurice ROMBERG DE VAUCORBEIL (1861 - 1943) Orientalist scene - the players Gouache and watercolor on paper mounted on wood panel Signed lower right 28 x 46 cm (view) Framed (Minor pitting and slight warping) NOTICE Maurice Romberg de Vaucorbeil (1861-1943) is a little-known French painter, yet an Orientalist artist sensitive to the artistic upheavals of the late 19th century. Influenced by the great Impressionist and Post-Impressionist currents, he distinguished himself by a delicate approach to light and a deeply poetic view of landscapes and nature. He frequented Parisian artistic circles, where he rubbed shoulders with renowned painters, particularly those who sought to break away from academic norms. His contemporaries included artists such as Camille Pissarro, with whom he shared an interest in rural scenes and everyday life. Romberg de Vaucorbeil also forged relationships with artists close to the Barbizon School, such as Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet, whose influence can be seen in his depiction of nature with great attention to detail and a sometimes realistic touch. A recognized Orientalist painter, he traveled the Cherifian Empire from 1887 onwards with the archaeologist Guy de la Martinière, then lived in Algiers and Marrakech, where he became the first European to blend in with the local population by donning Arab costume. A painter of Maghrebi architecture, he was even threatened when he depicted the Mensoûri mosque. His works, depicting royal processions, festivals and landscapes, are a true testimony to the peaceful, sunny life of the Maghreb. They have been exhibited in Paris, London and Brussels.
