Michelangelo MAESTRI (1741-1821), after Woman in Antique Style Gouache on black silk 15.1 x 9.7 cm (view) Framed (Minor loss of material) NOTICE Michelangelo Maestri (c. 1779-1812) was an Italian neoclassical painter, best known for his gouaches inspired by the ancient frescoes of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as the works of Raphael and the Renaissance masters. Active in Rome in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Maestri specialized in the reproduction of mythological and allegorical scenes, often depicting gods, goddesses, muses and putti in elegant, ornamental compositions. His works, executed in gouache, were particularly appreciated by collectors and travelers on the Grand Tour, attracted by the growing interest in classical antiquity and its rediscovered remains. Maestri's compositions are marked by their richness of detail, the finesse of the figures and the vibrant use of color, giving them a unique decorative sparkle. Although his works are essentially reinterpretations of ancient frescoes, he manages to infuse these scenes with a neoclassical sensibility, combining an elegant style with a refined sense of the antique. Michelangelo Maestri was thus part of the revival of interest in antiquity, alongside artists such as Giovanni Battista Piranesi, famous for his engravings of Roman ruins, and the neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova. Maestri helped to disseminate an idealized vision of Antiquity, in perfect harmony with the aesthetic aspirations of European neoclassicism. His gouaches, sought-after by collectors today, remain an important trace of the neoclassical infatuation with the ancient world.
