NOTICE
Pierre Ambrogiani (1907-1985) was a French painter and colorist of Corsican origin, known for his vibrant, expressive works in which color plays a central role. Born in Marseille, Ambrogiani was self-taught and developed an early taste for painting, drawing inspiration from the light and landscapes of Provence. He distinguishes himself by his impetuous style, using a rich, bold palette that lends his canvases a unique emotional and visual intensity.
Ambrogiani has painted numerous landscapes of Provence, still lifes and scenes of daily life. His favorite subjects include village views, bustling markets, bouquets of flowers and colorful portraits. His work is characterized by the thickness of the pictorial material and the strength of the tones, often applied with a knife, giving it an almost sculptural appearance. He loved to play with light contrasts, creating dynamic, powerful compositions.
Although strongly attached to his native region, Pierre Ambrogiani exhibited in numerous galleries in Paris, Europe and the United States. His works have captivated collectors with their energy and sense of freedom. Like painters such as Raoul Dufy and Nicolas de Staël, he has followed in the tradition of the great colorists, while retaining a singularity marked by his deep connection with the South of France.
Ambrogiani was also a friend of many artists and intellectuals, including Jean Cocteau and Marcel Pagnol, and helped to spread the Marseilles art scene beyond the region's borders. In addition to painting, he experimented with other art forms, such as engraving, ceramics and book illustration.
Today, Pierre Ambrogiani is recognized as an important figure in 20th-century Provençal art, an artist whose works are synonymous with the light and warmth of southern France, expressed with inimitable chromatic intensity.
