Born in Geneva, Ranft moved to Paris in the 1880s, where he quickly became part of the French capital's vibrant artistic scene. He made a name for himself with his etchings, lithographs and illustrations, which were often published in magazines and literary works. Ranft's work is marked by a fascination with the world of dreams, myths and poetry, an aspect that links him to Symbolism, a major artistic movement of the late 19th century. His etchings are particularly delicate and mysterious, with female figures, misty landscapes and imaginary creatures taking center stage. His creations also often have an erotic dimension, while retaining a subtle, poetic aesthetic. Ranft collaborated with several renowned writers to illustrate their works, notably in luxury editions, where his work as an engraver was much sought-after. He was also close to the poster and lithography world, as evidenced by his advertising and artistic creations for Parisian cabarets and events. Close to the artists of the Belle Époque, he evolved in a context where artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Théophile Steinlen dominated the poster and printmaking scene in Paris. Ranft was also influenced by the great printmaking masters such as Félix Vallotton and Odilon Redon, who shared his taste for mystery and the imaginary. Although less well-known than some of his contemporaries, Richard Ranft left a rich body of work, demonstrating a refined talent for drawing and engraving, with a sensibility that oscillates between symbolism and impressionism. Today, he is recognized as an important figure in the graphic arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
