NOTICE
Jean Derval (1925-2010) is one of the major figures of 20th-century French ceramics, known for his style that blends popular tradition and modernity. He made his debut in the 1940s, learning clay from Pierre Pigaglio and Jean Maubrou in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, a historic center of French pottery. Strongly influenced by popular imagery, Derval also drew inspiration from the works of the Lerat couple, as well as the creations of Paul Beyer. His work is rooted in a craft tradition that he revisits with a touch of poetry and modernity.
In 1947, Derval moved to Vallauris, a meeting place for ceramists and artists in search of innovation, where he collaborated with fellow ceramists Roger Capron and Robert Picault at the Callis studio. It was in this artistic effervescence that he honed his unique style, blending sculptural forms with decorative motifs influenced by folklore. In 1951, at his wife's instigation, Derval founded his own workshop, "Le Portail", where he developed a production marked by scenes of rural life, stylized animals and colorful compositions. He thus followed in the footsteps of the great Vallauris ceramists, such as Georges Jouve and Charles Greber, while maintaining a distinct voice, imbued with naivety and vitality.
Derval also follows in the footsteps of post-war ceramists such as Gustave Reynaud and François Raty, who redefined utilitarian ceramics as artistic objects in their own right. His works, often influenced by the simplicity and spontaneity of folk art, incorporate references to religious and mythological iconography, while cultivating a keen sense of color and volume. Derval has succeeded in combining tradition and innovation, making his workshop "Le Portail" a key player in the revival of French ceramics.
