Based in Vallauris, a village of potters on the Côte d'Azur, Ramié played a central role in the renaissance of modern ceramics in France. Trained in traditional ceramic techniques, she founded the Madoura workshop in 1938, where she developed a unique style combining simplicity of form and richness of glaze. However, it was above all her collaboration with artists such as Pablo Picasso, who frequented the studio from 1946, that propelled Madoura to legendary status. Together, they created a series of ceramics in which contemporary art was expressed through traditional materials. Picasso produced more than 4,000 pieces, making the Atelier Madoura a key center for the dialogue between modern art and craftsmanship. Suzanne Ramié was not only an accomplished ceramist, but also an influential figure who attracted renowned artists to ceramics. Georges Jouve, a contemporary ceramist, shares her exploration of modern ceramic forms. Like Ramié, he fuses functionality and aesthetics, creating objects that are both utilitarian and sculptural. Roger Capron, another Vallauris-based ceramist, is also close to the work of Atelier Madoura, integrating artistic elements into functional pieces, reflecting a shared desire to reinvent ceramics. Jean Derval, who also works in Vallauris, follows this same dynamic, exploring glazed earthenware and creating expressive forms, often influenced by folk art. André Baud, a ceramist who combined art and craft, also frequented Vallauris and shared with Suzanne Ramié a contemporary vision of ceramics. All these artists, attracted by the Atelier Madoura and Suzanne Ramié's creative aura, helped redefine the status of ceramics, transforming it from an applied art to a genuine form of artistic expression in the modern art landscape.
