Antoine-Louis BARYE (1795-1875) - Lot 138
Antoine-Louis BARYE (1795-1875)
Tartar Rider
Proof in bronze with brown shaded patina
Old edition cast iron signed on the terrace
37 x 36 cm
(Missing the plumet on the top of the helmet)
Emblematic of the romantic statuary, this model is one of the most famous of the sculptor. Nine proofs of the horseman were made between July 1850 and March 1857, and there are less than fifty proofs in old cast iron. The popularity of the model was assured by the posthumous castings of Ferdinand Barbedienne.
A similar copy is preserved in the Musée du Louvre, Department of Medieval, Renaissance and Modern Sculptures, inv. no. 875; 1032.
